Score bands

What your score means

Scores in India range from 300 to 900. Each bureau and lender uses its own cut-offs; these are typical bands.

750 – 900

Excellent

Best chance of approval and the lowest interest rates.

700 – 749

Good

Most lenders will consider you, with competitive rates.

650 – 699

Fair

Approval is possible but rates may be higher and limits lower.

300 – 649

Needs work

Many lenders may decline. Focus on repaying dues on time.

What affects it

How to improve your score

Repayment history

Paying EMIs and card bills on time is the single biggest factor.

Credit utilisation

Using less than ~30% of your card limits signals responsible use.

Credit mix

A healthy mix of secured and unsecured credit helps over time.

Recent enquiries

Many loan applications in a short span can lower your score.

Improvements take time: consistent on-time payments over 6–12 months typically move your score more than any single action. Read more in our guide, how your credit score affects loan approval.

FAQs

Credit score questions

Does checking my own credit score lower it?

No. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and has no effect. Only lender enquiries made when you apply for credit (hard enquiries) can affect it.

How often is my credit score updated?

Lenders report to credit bureaus regularly, usually every month, so your score can change as new information is reported.

I have no credit history. What can I do?

Start small: a secured credit card against a fixed deposit, or a small consumer loan repaid on time, builds a history within a few months.

There's a mistake on my credit report. How do I fix it?

Raise a dispute with the credit bureau that issued the report, and inform the lender concerned. Bureaus must resolve disputes within the timelines set by RBI.
